Peter Kronreif, drums

--

SEÁN MCCLUSKEY is a jazz pianist whose music "evok[es] the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Bob James and Uri Caine without directly imitating any of them." (Dean Minderman, St. Louis Jazz Notes). His eclectic compositional and performance repertoire draws influence from a number of different traditions: traditional Irish melodies, Puerto Rican salsa, medieval polyphony, and contemporary Israeli music. Above all, though, his aesthetic is informed by the jazz tradition - as Neil Tesser of the Chicago Reader wrote, "[McCluskey's] solos bubble with originality - but for all his inventiveness, his playing consistently reaffirms core jazz values like ear-catching technique and narrative propulsion."

stories, McCluskey’s second release as a leader, was featured on the BBC and on RTÉ in May 2020. The album draws inspiration from some of his favorite literary figures: Joseph Conrad, Claude McKay, and Charlotte Brontë among them. “All of my favorite works of art, in any medium, tell a story,” he shares. “Through abstract or representational means, they communicate their stories so profoundly that I believe them – that I believe in them.” The resulting compositions of this inspiration, the product of seven years of work, are brought to life on stories with the help of McCluskey’s long-standing trio partners, and Brooklyn jazz stalwarts, Peter Kronreif on the drums and Nick Jost on bass.

McCluskey’s first release, The Beginning, was released in 2011; he also has five sideman recording credits to his name. He currently lives in Brooklyn, his home of eight years after stints in his native Boston and in Chicago. 2020 marks Seán’s sixth year of teaching music full-time in NYC public schools.
